Real World

In the real world it is hard to get things accomplished by yourself.  Lately there has been a lot of working together in the office which I have really been enjoying.  I like being able to get to know the other interns I'm working with better.  It is nice to be able to bounce ideas off each other and give each other feedback on our ideas.  Ron gave an especially powerful speech today about how in the real world people won't always be nice to your face and if they are it is probably because they are bad mouthing you behind your back.  Instead of telling us what we want to hear he told us the truth.  He criticized the artists work especially but said that the writing would be criticized once he read it which hopefully wont be soon....I'm scared.

Another real world experience was being able to go with Ron to Watertown yesterday to try to sell a website and pr package to a Pilates studio.  It was a really good way to see how Ron interacted with the people he was selling to and what he said to make sure they stayed interested despite the cost.  I learned a few things.  One of the most important is that you have to adapt to the people who you are talking to.  If the person you are talking to is calm and relaxed as these people were it is okay to be informal.  Instead of acting like he was trying to sell them something Ron acted like he was talking to a friend.  I think that is very important in the business realm because most people don't want to feel like someone is superior to them.  If you talk to them as if they were your friend, even when it comes to less informal meetings and more professionals, it seems that you are on the same level and are making some sort of agreement instead of a sale.

I think that these were both great learning experiences for me because it has started to make me think about future jobs I may come across.  I feel more prepared than I did coming into the internship after just 4 weeks of being here and I am sure that will only increase.

Almost the weekend!
