Esente Music Group PR Intern Blog
My research for Onpoint media today was focused around print and publishing companies in Lowell; I was able to find 22 leads. I moved onto continuing my compilation of Rhode Island festivals, fairs, and malls. It's a slow process, but I am making headway. What I have found is that many of the fairs and festivals have not yet been planned for this year. Most of the websites indicate that information will be posted in the near future, but that is of no use to me. My list of Essex county school contacts is coming along. I was able to find the contacts for local fire and police departments, several schools, and several hospitals. Compiling these contacts into a single document is a painstakingly slow process, but hopefully it will pay off and provide a good number of places for Becca Levy to set up meet and greets!

What's New with the Interns?

3/28/13- Today, I researched companies in Topsfield, MA collecting 37. I brought up my number from yesterday to 10 leads.  Then after lunch I continued to collect 63 bands for One Night Stand project.  The bands will be sent a package email to see if they want to play for a great cause.

End of Another Week

It's Thursday! Which means, Friday is less than a day away! I know I personally can't wait for the weekend to arrive, so I can sleep in one day. Also because I have a decent amount of homework and projects to be working on. But anyways, moving more toward the direction of Esente, things are going pretty well. We have recently started compiling new lists of middle and high schools, as well as fire and police departments in various towns and cities throughout Essex county. I made a decent dent in one of the towns I was assigned, but there is still a lot of plugging information into the spreadsheet to do.

Yesterday, Laura showed several of the interns how to do Internet research for OnPoint Media in a different way than we have previously been using. This new method involves finding surrounding businesses around a business they have sold a website to. The thinking behind this is that these businesses may be interested in some web design, considering a business or two in their general area has done so. In order for us to compile and collect information in this new manner, we target the original location of the business (which has/will be getting a new website through OnPoint) and find any businesses around the original that may also be interested in doing so. I have just begun using this new method today and I am still trying to figure out how best to utilize it.

Shortly before I left yesterday, Ron had begun a meeting with the interns. He talked about various aspects writing a resume for when we look for jobs. He mentioned how you should work on the wording of a resume in order to make it sound more appealing. It's not that we wouldn't already, but he suggested that things can always be told better. This makes sense, because instead of saying one thing, you can beef it up in order to appeal to more employers. He always brought up the point of how one could translate their abilities into a potential job. This made me think a little deeper, because it's not easy finding jobs as it is. And being an artist/designer, you have to be capable of not only art and design but many other tasks as well. The job market is dog eat dog, especially when their are multiple designers vying for one position.

I have 25 leads this morning. I ended up with 34 last Tuesday.
It's getting close to graduation day! Lots of printing and projects to do. I'm nervous but excited. Thank you Ron and everybody at Esente for the great internship opportunity!

The Value and Hardships of Internet Research

This week we finished up the database of stadiums and arenas where Becca Levy or Jayna Linginger might be able to sing the National Anthem.  I kind of enjoyed going through some of the minor league/semi-professional websites.  Some of them looked shoddy enough that I was tempted to add them to an OnPoint leads list, and many of their oddball marketing strategies reminded me of Bull Durham for no particular reason.  When I lived in Sacramento I would sometimes tell people that I was a former minor league middle reliever in either the Red Sox or Mets organizations because I thought it would be funny.  It was - especially because nearly half of the people seemed to believe me.  But now I can't help but think how much more effective I might have been, had doing this kind of research occurred to me five years ago.  This is actually a serious point about the value of internet research.  Searching for contacts and sifting for relevant information is a use for the internet that never really occurred to me for some reason.  While I'm not likely to need the email of the Brockton Rox's pitching coach, I may need to find an editor at a magazine/newspaper, the programming director of a radio station, booking manager of a club, contact at a record label or film company and so forth.  In fact I'm sure that my past ignorance of these depths of the Internet have stood in my way at some time or another, but now I know how to go about navigating through them.

This week we're starting on town-by-town lists of High School and Middle School contacts (as well as local police, fire departments, hospitals, and superior officer's unions).  I thought that I was breezing through it until I realized we were suppose to include EVERY contact we could find.  Seems like we're not just throwing spaghetti at the wall, but a couple generically modified tomatoes and an oregano plant as well. It makes sense since every given person who works in a school might be concerned about bullying.  And even if the principal isn't interested, I'm willing to bet that getting enough teachers and staff excited about it will pressure him to let Becca visit.  But there are a lot of names.  Luckily, they're at least pretty easy to come by.  It probably helps that it's a matter of public record (I think).  Not so much with private schools or police/fire departments and I'm yet to find any evidence of a superior officer's union, but generally speaking, you can find what you're looking for.

Friday, Kinda

Getting here today was so much easier than getting here yesterday. Without rain people tend to drive less like idiots and more like people. I've been working hard this morning on leads and getting my media list finished because I need to have it done by the end of the day today. It definitely will be, I'm just trying to be as thorough as possible to get the most out of it. With over 400 different platforms and roughly 3 contacts per platform it takes a little bit of time. It will probably be what I spend the rest of today working on.

This weekend I plan to do some more work on the posters I've been working on. I haven't done a lot with those lately because we have had so many bigger projects going on. Between music videos, One Night Stand, and the National Anthem work I've been pretty busy. But I do want to get those finished sooner rather than later.

Esente Today

Today has been pretty interesting, people are actually talking in the office (mind blown) usually its like a library in here. Normally everyone is plugging away at their computers trying to get leads for OnPointMedia. Today however, I think a serious case of A.D.D. has spread through the office, how ever it has made the process of collecting leads little more enjoyable.

Jon Rose
Esente Music Group Graphics Intern
Working on the leads and media list, same old work. But there is a new system of collecting leads, using Google Maps and literally searching around the map looking for markers for businesses. I like this system a bit more, it more of literal searching but I could see how it could be less efficient way of collecting leads because there could be a lot of businesses that could be missed by using this method.

General Update / Poster Update

Yesterday when I was here at Esente it was quite a productive day, considering the various tasks and projects I have been working on. I started the day off conducting leads for OnPoint. I continued working on the previous list I was assigned on Monday and then moved on to several other small lists for Lawrence, MA. I then moved onto "other consumer services". Ultimately, I ended the day with 34 businesses that could potentially become clients for the company.

We also started working on a new master list. This new list is a compilation of middle and high schools throughout Essex county in Massachusetts. We were each assigned several cities/towns within this county to investigate and collect all necessary information. I was assigned Topsfield, Wenham and West Newbury. I worked on this for about two hours yesterday and only came class to finishing one list. I began searching for the middle and high school in Topsfield, and found tens upon tens of contacts for all the staff in both schools. The list is pretty extensive so far, and I have only begun retrieving information for one town.

After conducting Internet research and beginning this new list, I was able to work more on one of my posters. This poster is meant to call attention to verbal bullying, as opposed to bullying in general. I think it's important to address the various forms of bullying, instead of one general/broad theme of bullying. I am still working on this poster, but it had been a while since I have updated with a graphic. I actually thought of a completely different idea for the verbal bullying poster (below), but I figured I would share what I had done already. I plan to post more visual updates as soon as more progress is made!

Why is Manta problematic?

Valerie Nelkin
St. Lawrence University ‘10

Usually doing leads is pretty easy, just click the link, do your research, get your information, repeat.  However, when Manta decides to be annoying, it gets a little more complicated.  Today, for instance, if your list had multiple pages, Manta refused to go past the first page, so longer lists were pretty much impossible to do today.  Luckily, Laura came to the rescue!  A new technique for finding leads, where we basically just started from one business in a town, Google mapped it, and look around the map for more businesses.  Took awhile to adjust, but once I found my groove (by starting from the center point business and spiraling out) it turned out to be more interesting and less monotonous than using Manta.
We also had another epic intern meeting with Ron, where we learned about Joseph's Team, which is an autism group, and how they have comedy shows that the interns can volunteer to help with.  We also learned about resume building, and the importance of targeted resumes rather than general ones.  The easiest way to keep up the resumes being what Ron calls "modulating," or making lists of everything we've done, boxing up each individual thing to keep it easy to change up the resume when need be.
I also reworked one of my posters a bit:

Makes it seem a little darker and scary, but my text is still an issue I need to work on, but as soon as I'm happy with the text I think this poster will be completed.

What's New with the Interns?

2/27/2013
Today, I learned a new way of doing leads with using Google Maps.  I start off with a business and divide the categories by same, similar, or neighbors to put other companies in the area.  With this I collected 22 companies in the area of Billerica, MA.  I think this is an easier way to collect because Google has a lot of the sites listed and you just have to click them to find contact information, still only collecting if they have emails.  I made a list of what I did so far in the internship, being half way through, which I will add describe words to put on my resume.  I looked at the One Night Stand site, that is in the works, to give corrects to Amanda.  I found one spelling mistake, Logo color to dark for other page then home page, and some align issues.  Then for the rest of the day I worked on collecting ALL contacts for Salem High School which have the whole school.

Resumes

The time has come to begin thinking about resumes. During our intern meeting today Ron briefly went over a few important things to remember and consider when editing our resumes. I will begin to look back through my notes in order to compile a list of exactly what I have done at Esente to date. It will be good to have a draft of an updated resume for when I begin to seek job opportunities for after my time at Esente. We also went over some details about the One Night Stand event during today’s intern meeting. Specifically, we are beginning to think about what kinds of bands to look for once we begin the contacting and booking phases of the project. After being introduced, for the first time, to the One Night Stand website, we continued our work on compiling Essex county school contact information.

What's new with the graphics interns?

2/26/2013
Today, I started my day off with researching for companies in Cambridge that could become clients for On Point.  In total I collecting 45, which is my all time best since started doing leads.  Then I worked on a new poster for Anti-Bullying, creating a rope image and layout the text. It is still a rough draft and might change the image, not sure what I want though. This will be used for Becca Levy Tour for anti-bully campaign. We were given a new project to find all the contacts for Middle and High schools for towns in Massachusetts.  I collected 6 schools in Salem, MA for the day.

Building a List, Building a Tour

Yesterday we started on our new list project, compiling contacts for high schools, middle schools, police departments, fire departments, hospitals, and superior officers' union (police).  These will be used to build Becca Levy a small tour of towns in Massachusetts where she can speak and/or perform.  The police dept, fire dept, hospital and union info is for soliciting financial support for the Right Now campaign, specifically the tour.  The high schools and middle schools are where she will be speaking/performing.  Of all the internet research we've done so far (not including leads for OnPoint), I think this will be the most useful.  Obviously the crowds will be smaller than at a baseball game and won't equal the circulation size of most newspapers, it will be more focused.  Instead of having Becca appear somewhere and hope that there are enough people of the right demographic to make it worth our time, this makes sure that everyone is of the desired demographic.  Best of all, they (students) don't have a choice.  They have to at least pretend to be listening to her.  I also think that for the students, hearing her sing/speak will seem more entertaining by comparison to algebra and Shakespeare.  If only Oasis had had a marketing campaign this targeted, Noel Gallagher could stop whining about how nobody bought their first album.

One Step Forward

Yesterday I was only at the Esente office for a few hours until I had to run to a class in the afternoon. I conducted more leads as usual when I first got in. I had several lists to investigate in order to find more potential clients for OnPoint Media. I sifted through "electrical", "electronics", "energy and resources" and "environmental markets". I haven't been finding as many potential clients, leads, as I have in previous weeks. But I managed to find about 34 out of about 70 businesses in total. Actually this is quite good considering half of them had all the information needed, in order to add them to a master list.

Speaking of lists.. I believe we have, or are in the finishing stages of completing the National Anthem lists. Yesterday during a brief meeting with the interns, Ron mentioned another list we will begin compiling. This new list is a compilation of middle schools and high schools where Becca Levy would ideally be able to speak about her Right Now, anti bullying cause, as well as perform a small acoustic set. Ron wanted us to investigate schools throughout Massachusetts.

The new list would be broken down into several counties in Massachusetts, and each intern would be assigned numerous cities/towns to look into. We are hoping to find several hundred contacts to reach out to, in order to generate the list of stops (middle/high schools) for Becca to conduct a speaking/performance tour. This will enable her to reach out to students, who are typically the victims of bullying. I think this is a great way to spread the incredible message that Becca wants to share with everyone.

I also worked some more on my poster for verbal bullying. I spent about 2 hours changing things around, sizing various items, among other tasks, just for me to trash what I had completed. For some reason the poster just wasn't coming together as I had hoped, so I plan to eagerly work on the design of this more today.I felt I was making progress, but really I took one step forward and two steps back when I ultimately trashed the so-called "progress". A visual update will be coming shortly!

I started off my day with leads, of which I found 23. I then moved onto compiling a list of shopping malls, festivals, and fairs in the state of Rhode Island. To do this, I created a googledoc spreadsheet. I still have research to do in order to make sure that my list is complete. During the second half of the day we all worked on compiling a list of all of the contacts in the Essex county school system. Our goal is to contact as many people as we can in an effort to get Becca Levy to be able to give presentations at each of the schools. There is still work to be done on these lists, as they are extremely long and require, in some cases, a bit of searching around.

27 leads so far today! Not too shabby, considering my usual numbers. I completed 2 more posters for anti-bullying and they're anxiously awaiting critique from the group. One of them was an exercise in compound paths and clipping masks, It was good practice for something I had forgotten how to do for a time. I love learning new things! I don't know if my posters will ever be circulated to be seen but it definitely helps sharpen my computer skills. My research tasks here at Esente have helped in my homework for school, I can research subjects faster and more efficiently for classes now. So far, I really like it here! I was hoping for an internship that would teach me as well as further develop what I already know.

Esente Today

What have we learned today at Esente? Well I personally learned that ANYTHING dealing with law, and getting leads for Lawrence MA legal, is a PAIN IN THE BUTT! Most of the listings are of lawyers names and dont actually show what firm they work for, and most of the firms dont like to give out their email because of privacy laws. As far as what has happened from the end of last week, I mainly worked on getting information together to better prepare ourselves for the start up of "One Night Stands on Bullying" concert site. I was put to the task of beginning to figureing out how to better make it so that bands want to play at the "One Night Stand" shows. I came up with 20 questions that the bands might ask us about the shows and the experience that we can answer in order to get the bands on the tour.

3 Years Experience Required

Yesterday I spent some time browsing Craigslist to check for any new job listings in the Art/Media/Design section. While looking through them I started to realize just how valuable this internship will be for me. Just about every listing wanted applicants to excel in several different skills, most not even relating to art, media, or design. I've applied to a lot of jobs through Craigslist (including this one) with pretty much zero response. It will be interesting to see if that changes when this internship is over and I actually have some worthwhile experiences on my resume.

I'm nearing the end of this media list that I have been working on for the state of Ohio. I'm working my way through radio stations and I'll soon be starting TV stations. The Radio stations have been pretty easy to get through because most of the stations are owned by a larger company such as ClearChannel or I<3Radio so they all have the same contact info as far as advertising and GM positions. March 1st is the deadline for these media lists and soon after that we will be getting ready to really start the One Night Stand anti-bullying campaign. I'm really interested in seeing just how things will unfold once we start firing on all cylinders. We have been gathering information and talking about marketing strategies for so long and I'm ready to see how it all works out.

Who Has Your Back?

Lately, I have been working hard on the Buzz on Bullying website and have been messing around with pictures (see above). Now, I'm no graphic artist by any means but I am passionate about the the anti-bullying cause, giving myself a chance to just relax and get creative. Reviewing articles, I came across two that really made me think (which are both posted on the site!). One is about Rebecca Marino calling it quits in the tennis world after cyber-bullying has caused her grief. This drives me crazy that the internet where innovative ideas are shared and created is used as a tool for harm. The second story is about a high school student named Kayla Miller who has been teach kids to be an 'Upstander' rather than a 'Bystander'. Its so important to be aware of your surroundings and know when to go into action for someone in need. Bullying doesn't end in school.

Not much to report today about yesterday, did more leads as always.  Though in our intern meeting, we did discuss a new project, collecting contact information for high schools, junior high schools, police and fire departments and hospitals to try to get Becca doing some anti-bullying presentations.  Seems easy enough so far, though I'm still only on my first town.
I also learned about the fanart that we can do for Becca, which doesn't seem like that difficult a thing to do, I just never thought of it.  Already have an idea in my head for a piece, will post some pics as soon as I get it out of my head and into an image.

New Research Topic

Starting yesterday, the interns have been given a research task aimed at eventually finding our music client appearance opportunities at schools in Essex County Massachusetts. Our job is to research the schools in all the separate towns in the the area and collect contact information of faculty to inquire about a appearance on the topic of anti-bullying. Our main focus is on middle schools, but additional information is being collected on high schools and police departments, and hospitals. The purpose of emergency department contacts is to hopefully get some funding for the event from them. This project will be about as extensive as the media list project, if not more extensive.

I look forward to moving farther along with this and I will post updates as progress is made

Today I got the opportunity to sit in on an photo shoot for the website OnPoint is working on and got to watch how things worked. Fortunately, this photo shoot was a very strait forward one. Most of the photos were commercial photos of some products on the showroom floor with a few head shots of the owner and some of the employees. I would have liked to go to a bit more average of a photo shoot than a smaller one, but it was a fun experience regardless.

Crowdfunding.

Last week interns worked in a group of 4-5 to search information about Kickstarter, crowdfunding website. Our team found that this web source doesn't work for us because our project doesn't match with their requirements. Moreover, I went over Music Think Tank.com. There are some useful articles about crowdfunding, for example The Crowdfunding Quandry: Sales Vs. Art Vs. The little Voice Inside Your Head, which help me to gain deeper understanding about crowdfunding system. Our team gave 2-3 pages conclusion to Ron about what we have learned.

In my opinion I think music business involves both sales and art. Artists not only do
the music things but also want to make money for living. It would be great if they can
balance both things. Crowdfunding is a great choice for artists but I think it doesn’t suit
for artists who concern only about the money matter.

I found the RocketHub, another crowdfunding site, from an article in music
think tank. It could be one of our choices to find funding for One night stand
project. We can keep the funds we raise (not an "all or nothing" model).
RocketHub´s Crowdfunding Success School provides you the
step-by-step break down How do you succeed at crowdfunding? (http://
www.rockethub.com)

Furthermore, I searched “crowdfunding for music” on Google and found Tubefund.com
website. It’s exclusively for musicians which they
can crowdfund their
with a TuneFund campaign. (http://tunefund.com/home/content/support/4)

Thank you :)

This Week as an Esente Music Group Intern

I had another mediocre day with leads this morning.  Most of my time was spent sifting throughout the Educational Services listing of Lawrence, MA.  Apparently of the 90-some-odd "educational services" in Lawrence, only a dozen or so include the Internet in their curriculum.  We're starting to build new lists this week.  I had been under the impression that we would be working on shopping malls and state fairs where Becca Levy and Jayna Linginger can perform, which I have already started on, but this morning there was some mention of high schools so perhaps we'll be doing both.  My media list is done.  Our National Anthem list is fairly complete but I happened to look over some of the other sections at the end of last week and found them pretty lacking so we may have to play a little bit of catch-up.

On a more general note, there is has been a lot of talk over the past couple of weeks about re-inventing the wheel, or to be more accurate, not trying to re-invent the wheel.  The basic premise is that nothing new is being done anymore.  For example, no one has done anything new in music for the past five years or so.  There are definitely some more fringe-culture bands who have truly unique sounds, but they don't make much more money than they need to survive, if that.  There was some mention of Mumford & Sons allegedly having developed a new sound, but there's really nothing new about them.  All they did was take bluegrass and ruin it.  But I'm not sure that that isn't indicative of a trend.  You may not be able to successfully reinvent the wheel, but it seems you can certainly break the wheel and sell it as something else, a horrible chair perhaps.

Internship week 5, Monday

On Wednesday, I spent the first part of the day working on the Cambridge lead list, conducting internet research on financial companies in the area. After an hour and a half, I resumed work on the Pennsylvania media list I was given. The list was partially completed by another intern who wound up leaving Esente, and was a total disaster - it was completely disorganized, seemingly random, and potentially incomplete. On Monday, I had begun the work of sorting out what was what, as well as what was from USNPL and what wasn't. Wednesday, I was able to complete comparing the now-organized list to the list on USNPL. Many of her contacts had missing information like email addresses and phone numbers, so I went back through the entire list and filled in all of the missing information (which is odd - how she didn't find the info that I found rather effortlessly is a mystery). After that, I noticed that she had skipped many of the papers that were on USNPL's list, so I finished up with any extra papers that I could find.

After another hour and a half, I was able to move on to graphic design work. I finally finished working on the Becca Levy fan art. I sent both files I had been working on to my supervisor Amanda. She and the other girls who were still around by that time (around 5-6pm) seemed to enjoy both of them despite my discontent for the first one I had created and abandoned. For the remainder of what little time I had left, I revisited my anti drunk driving posters. Next, I will be making fan art for Jayna Lininger as well as wrapping up my drunk driving posters.

So last week, as always, we worked a bit more on leads, and then were split up into groups to do some research on a few different things.  In my group, we researched kickstarter.com to see if it had any potential for the One Night Stand campaign, which it turns out, it didn't.  Kickstarter requires that a project have a definite goal and end, and that an actual product be made from it.  It does not allow charity or cause funding, so that kind of automatically means it won't allow this particular campaign.  After that, we worked on learning more about crowdfunding on the Music Think Tank blog, which gave us a lot of in depth information to work with.

I also got an idea for a new anti bullying poster -- kind of going along the rather morbid lines of school shootings, taking it from the perspective of a first person shooter video game.  The wording needs work, but my general idea is to talk about how 'experts' blame video games for the violence, but that most students say school shootings are motivated by the desire for revenge against bullies.  Soon as I have a rough draft, I will post it for feedback.

Moving Foward

Today, I can finally say that I have finished the state media list for Massachusetts! Woo-hoo! After working on it sporadically throughout the last few weeks, I have finally completed all necessary media contacts. The list includes media contacts for newspapers, magazine, radio, college newspapers and college radio. The interns were expected to have these lists completed by the very end of the month. Once they are all completed, I believe we are going to begin reaching out to these contacts.

As usual, the first task I started when walking into the Esente office was conducting more Internet research for OnPoint Media. I began by finishing up a "Building and Construction" list of businesses in Lawrence, MA and then proceeded to "Electrical" and now "Electronics". So far I have accumulated roughly 30 leads, and hope to reach about 50 in total today.

Now that both the state media list and the National Anthem lists are completed, we are going to start another master list and moving forward with other projects. I'm not entirely sure what this new list will be, but it should be interesting to say the least. Several interns have been assigned projects to work on. Last week I was given the task of breaking down and taking screen shots of an informative video, which we will be using. I'm not sure the direction that this will go, but I am excited to see!

I also plan to keep working and creating my anti-bullying posters. One is just about completed, which addresses verbal bullying. I have yet to start the other two, that will be similar in their design and appeal. I will post (very soon) some of the progress I have made on these posters. It has been a while since I have shown some of the graphics I have been working on, so I think it's almost time again to post what I have accomplished.

Surprising News!

Exciting news today in the intern world! Next week we are meeting one of our amazing artist that we have been working hard to promote! Tuesday and Wednesday Becca Levy will be coming in to say hi. What I most value about Esente is that in a big company, we would not be able to have the opportunity to meet the very people we are helping.

Its going to be exciting!

Rio Dupris 2/21/2013

I did 14 leads today. I must look into how some of my fellow interns get better numbers.
We had a good meeting with Ron today, he made a good point; "catch people doing a good job." He said corporations are mostly concerned with catching people doing a bad job. Maybe that's why a lot of people are miserable at work. He gave us all a dose of gratitude for doing a good job, and it felt nice! It really helps to know you're appreciated, I think better results are attained that way rather than saying nothing until someone messes up and then jumping all over them. People want to work harder and happier when they know their efforts are getting noticed.
He also emphasized the importance of standing out at work, making your self valuable by going above and beyond the call of duty. Always strive to your best and then find ways to make it even better. Shine like a star! Don't baa like a sheep!

Don't Be A Sheep

Today upon arrival at Esente, I began just as I would any other day at the office. I started conducting Internet research for OnPoint Media under the "Building and Construction" list. So far I have collected about 25 "leads" for the company. Members of the staff then inquire these companies in order to redesign their website or sell them one. This system of Internet research seems very efficient in collecting potential clients/candidates for the website sales.

Shortly after plunging into the Internet research, Ron had a short meeting with the interns. He wanted to emphasize the importance of making yourself valuable to a company. Instead of being a "sheep" and blend in with the rest, try to make yourself stand out. Don't just do what you are told to do and leave it at that, go above and make decisions and brings your won ideas to the table. What can I offer a company, that others can't? You essentially have to self promote in order to make a lasting impression.

Don't be a sheep. Be a wolf...in sheep's clothing.
