So for my first day, why don't I tell you about me? I'm a student at Rochester Institute of Technology majoring in Graphic Design and minoring in Creative Writing. I may not be the best at hand drawing, but I love working with the computer to create simple, modern, and effective designs— especially ones that highlight typography. Working with Esente puts to use what I like doing for a great cause, and all with music included, so what could be better? I love the creative freedom that graphic design allows me and I hope to help make a difference during my summer here.
Apart from graphic design, I'm interested in music— participating in its creation, listening to it, and watching other people make it. I play the flute, although at RIT I don't have many opportunities to play seeing as I like jazz and rock flute, and people usually can't find a use for that. Another thing I like: language. Obviously, being a creative writing minor I like writing, but I also like learning new languages and studying the ways language is used and how it works. One thing that draws me to typography is the manner in which it can affect the way people read and interpret the words in front of them, and all the other ways it can be used to manipulate language. You know what else is awesome? Photography. I've been involved in photography seriously since my sophomore year of high school, and since I've been at RIT I've taken all the classes available to non-photography majors— which is sad because now I won't have access to all their amazing equipment and studios. But I still have my camera and friends in the photography majors, so I'll definitely continue with my photography and printing endeavors. And this might be a weird one to put in words, but I love volunteering. Maybe that sounds pretentious, but I really do enjoy helping others. Seeing others smile and benefit from my knowledge or abilities makes me feel good about myself. And over the years, I've noticed that not everyone enjoys volunteering, and some people actually really dislike it, so I think it's perfectly okay for me to say that I do in fact enjoy it. For all four years of high school I volunteered every Friday night at Windrush Therapeutic Equitation Farms helping mentally disabled children learn to not only ride a horse, but to control their bodies and minds and to have fun, and I never minded one bit that I was "giving up" my Friday nights because I got to see the smiles on those kids' faces.
So that's me in a nutshell, and I've probably left out a lot but you'll be hearing more later anyway.
