Starting Off the Internship

I think it's safe to say that life is moving rapidly. I can feel myself slapping on my big kid boots and dashing off into the wonderful world of young adulthood with the oxymoronic pleasure of getting my feet wet in a professional setting. With that, today marked my first day as an intern for Esente Music Group, on my first summer break coming out of college, with my first little taste of a working environment more pertinent to my prospective career objectives than my previous affairs with the glory of Mexican restaurant serving or fanciful adventures in answering phones for an office. I've always wanted to see the inner workings of a company that promotes and markets--life is a business, after all--and I intend to fully absorb all that I can from being around people that clearly have this whole thing down. But I guess I should explain a little bit about where I'm coming from, what I'd like to accomplish, and where I am in my career, without sounding too much like a preachy child fulfilling the criteria for a teacher-approved resume in some career building class...I'll try my best. To put it plain and simple, this summer is planned to be the summer I change my life; or, at least, get my head in the game and my foot in the door. I just transferred from a school with an unsavory taste in my mouth, to say the least. I stayed for my freshman year in a dorm with a few questionable characters taking a few questionable classes and somehow managed to escape to a college I'd dreamed of attending since I was a wee lass--Emerson College in Boston. I'm studying Writing, Literature, and Publishing over there this coming fall and am thrilled to get into an environment that is so artistically oriented. I've got a few screenplays in the works, can finally go ahead and immerse myself in acting, and make some magic happen. I'm directing and writing a music video this summer, getting some auditions in, and now, working for Esente amongst other creative endeavors. I'm like a caged animal if I am not doing something creative. At Esente, I'm here doing things that work those creative muscles and really exercise my artistic skill. Like today, for example, where I had the opportunity to support a great cause, anti-bullying, and use my graphic design abilities to generate some cool posters. It was good fun, and I look forward to more projects like this and the feedback I can receive as a result. I also had the chance to meet Ron (or, well, watch him in his element as he hurried by) and see the man behind the company for a moment. I hope to learn from Ron if possible (I have some hopes in managing or producing acts myself) and maybe pick his brain at some point throughout this internship. I feel like we'd get along. I have great leaders here like Laura who continuously guide me as I start, which I appreciate, as well as what I perceive to be a supportive, endearing environment thus far. All in all, I'm liking the internship. After making some posters and getting a feel for what's possible here and beyond, I'm excited for the summer and have high hopes for what's ahead. Now, tomorrow, and everyday after that, I'm ready to go and truly want to make big things happen.
