Taking a Blog by Force and Figuratively 'Packing Up'

Leads for OnPoint went pretty well this morning.  Last night I wrote a third article for the Rock Report.  I think it's pretty good so I hope they still wanted me to write it, given that I've had trouble doing things when I want/need to do them this week (due to personal/family issues).  I'm thinking about just writing the articles unprovoked and submitting them in an effort to take it (the blog) over for the remainder of my time here.  The one thing I worry about it voice/sensibility.  While everything else on the blog is solidly written, I noticed that I'm the only one writing punchlines and referencing Tom Waits so I wonder if anyone who stumbles upon the blog (from outside of Esente Music Group) will be able to tell  that there are different writers.  And if so, does it matter?  Probably not.

With time here winding down, I'm trying to get a resume together that reflects the array of experience I've gotten here at Esente.  The first problem is 'where to begin?' but I suppose that should probably change depending on the job I'm applying for.  The second is where to end.  I wrote a draft of a resume a couple of weeks ago that turned out to be three pages and I'm still thinking of things I forgot to add.    I've never applied for a 'real' job before.  In the restaurant world, it's sometimes enough to make sure that you curse enough in the interview or if you now someone there, just walk into the kitchen and ask for a job.  Somehow I don't think that will fly in the world of young (in my case, sort of young) professionals.

What a busy day it was! I kicked off the morning by finding 22 leads for OnPoint Media. Later I found and summarized 3 articles for the Buzz on Bullying site, found a new video of the week, and got 3 new links for the bottom of the Buzz on Bullying website. I was very excited to be able to work on these assignments; as I have said before, I really enjoy writing, and seeing my work posted for a large audience is very very cool! I finished off the day finding bands for ONS in the Charleston WV area.

Lots To Do

This week has been the week of catching up on many of the tasks that we have going simultaneously. All the interns are hard at work collecting leads for OnPoint Media, as we have been vigorously researching all week in order to bring the numbers up to par. Yesterday wasn't too great of a day for leads for myself, as I found 35 in a list of over 200. Today I am still chipping away at the same list from yesterday, but with greater results... so far.

The other day Ron was mentioning to the interns that many of us have the opportunity to continue our internship if we so chose. I believe they have some people in mind, but it is up to each intern on whether or not they would like to continue. Ron assured us that even if we didn't want to continue the internship, it wouldn't reflect the work we have done in the past. Personally, I think I am interested in continuing the internship, 2.0 as they call it. What I would be doing, would consist of editing and keeping up to date on one of the many blog sites they have. That is, if I am offered to continue.

Today is my second long day at the office, so I hope to get many things accomplished today. I anticipate collecting as many leads as humanly possible. At least I would like too see an increase of the 35 that I was able to collect yesterday. I also want to finish up collecting school contacts for the Right Now campaign. Of the five cities/towns I was assigned, I believe I have three of them complete. So today I would like to finish that list and then perhaps move on to finding more bands for One Night Stand.

Slowly But Surely

Today leads have been going horrendously slow for me. Between having a long list with very few hits and listening to sports talk radio about a missed trade that happened for the Bruins all morning things have been quite repetitive to say the least. Since 6 a.m. this morning all of the analysts have been saying the same the thing. They could have just recorded an hour of material and played it on repeat and no one would really even be able to tell.

Yesterday we were asked to watch, like, and comment on a few of Becca's YouTube videos (http://www.youtube.com/user/beccalevymusic).I had a hand in the story boarding process of one of the videos and even though not a whole lot of what I worked on was used in the video it was cool to see the finished product of something I was involved with. It's also nice to have something to show people. A lot of times when people ask what I do at my internship it gets a little confusing because we usually have a lot going on all at once so things to get lost in my descriptions. But with these videos I can just bring up YouTube and say "this."

Catch Up Week Closure

So the week of catch up and band collection is winding down for the interns today as the nice weather finally starts to feel more than temporary. I began working this morning on business contact collection for OnPoint in Tewksbury MA, collecting 26 companies in the healthcare and furnishings market. This adds to my above average collection of this week and has contributed to the combined effort of increasing collections for web sales. Additionally, band collections for future One Night Stands event has been going very well. Each day has yielded hundreds of results in multiple cities and I do not see this progress slowing down. As I mentioned yesterday, if this pace does indeed continue, the collection process should be completed in about a weeks time. It is interesting to finally understand the process that goes into executing an event of this nature, which I have been looking forward to since the start of the semester here at Esente.

Enjoy the weekend, more updates will be posted on Monday.

A Drop In The Ocean

This anti bullying video features Right Now Against Bullying National Spokesperson Becca Levy. Becca is covering Ron Pope's “A Drop In The Ocean.” The song was huge success for Ron Pope in 2009, going all the way to number 19 in the Billboard Charts. The tune also gained prominence in 2011 when Javier Colon performed the song to a worldwide audience on television’s The Voice.

The video was designed, animated, and produced by San Francisco, CA native and Rhode Island School of Design's Lauren Ashizawa. Lauren conceived and completed the work while she was an intern at Esente Music Group in Beverly Massachusetts during the fall of 2012.
Ashizawa’s hard work did not go unnoticed. Especially my Becca Levy herself. The Washington DC native and anti bullying advocate said  “Lauren did a great job getting our message out in the most creative way I could imagine.”

Right Now spokesperson Laura Kelly states, “ We are very lucky to have all this young talent available to us. Perhaps the best way to help effect change in young people is through other young people. This collaboration is a great example of the power of music and creativity. I am very proud of Becca and Lauren.

“This was a very cool collaboration. Combining the power of art and music proved to be an extremely powerful tool. The way Lauren incorporated her amazing illustration skills with the animation just blew me away ” says sixteen-year-old Levy. “As for the music I love Ron Pope and I love the song as well. I always thought we could incorporate the song into a video somehow to raise anti-bullying awareness."

These Meeting Should Be Recorded

Yesterday afternoon we began working with live ammo while looking for bands to play for the One Night Stand anti-bullying concert series. For some reason collecting material for those lists gets a lot more social than gathering the leads for On Point in the morning. Maybe it's because everyone has had enough coffee by then or something. Mostly we just make snide comments about the bands names and description but still, we're talking.

Today in our meeting we talked about the possibility of continuing the internship but really concentrating on one area during that time. It's something I'll have to look into and think about if it will fit into my summer work schedule. But it would be a good opportunity to hone some skills in areas where they may be weak.

Making Progress

Today has started to feel more like spring than ever. Finally. It felt like winter was never going to end last week but the last two days have been the way I picture spring coming around, sunny, breezy, and warm. On a more serious note, my business contact collection for OnPoint has been the best it has ever been. I was able to cover multiple market sections from Swampscott and Stoneham, MA and collected 38, my semester record. Yesterday afternoon was also the most serious grind with band collection for the upcoming One Night Stands events. The interns each collected 50 bands on average, putting our total collection to an estimated 400 bands. This is huge progress. If we keep it  up we should cover all the cities in about one week.

That's all for today.

Esente Today

Well, its the end of the Esente work week and things have been moving along pretty smoothly. Yesterday, the interns were given a new assignment to gather bands and artists from reverbnation.com for the OneNightStands Concert series. Finding bands for a rock show has been really fun because we get to see and listen to all of the bands, and let me tell you some of the bands are really stpid/funny as hell. As allways, I compiled leads for the company for the towns of Stoneham and Tewksbury. I was given a graphics assignment to create a facebook button advertisement, so that the company can draw more attention to the Buzz on Bullying blog page.

Esente Music Group Internship...To Be Continued?

Today in our intern meeting we talked about the possibilities for us to continue our internship through the summer.  I (and others), for example would be offered an blog editorial position, to some degree of our own choosing.  I will probably take them up on this opportunity but a big selling point for me would be if I could edit Ron's "Rock Report" blog.  In fact, I would probably do it just for fun in addition to something else.  I've written a couple entries recently which I enjoyed thoroughly.  I think that for one of them I may have written a summary of an article that was longer (and better written of course) than the article itself.  But the bottom-line is that of everything we've done so far, other than maybe the Becca Levy music video/PSA, it's the closest to what I actually want to be doing.

I missed the early part of this week for family-related reason and thus missed a lot of band collecting for the One Night Stand events.  First of all, I apparently missed some kind of technological breakthrough that made the process much easier, so I'll to get filled in on that.  Second of all, I enjoyed going through hundreds of bands and judging them against my own and other I know.

Another day, Another list of leads. I've been working on some more ideas for a poster. I wanted to address the issues of cyber-bulling. I wanted to base the style on social media so I started with Facebook. I almost want to make it more interchangeable type of design and use other website where cyber bullying happens. The poster is about 95% done but I need to have a headline, I might just use the Break the Silence headline I've used for previous posters.

Internship week 9, Weds

On Monday, we had an intern meeting basically as soon as I got in for the day. We discussed a few things about the importance of collecting leads and what our goals are for the foreseeable future. We have begun contacting venues for One Night Stand, and need to begin contacting bands from the venue areas. We were given sections to browse through of ReverbNation, and were told to listen to the bands on the list and research any of them that could be a potential fit for the show using a Google spreadsheet. I finished my first section and was given a second, though it was too far down the list & the bands no longer had contact information or music to listen to.

I was then asked to move on to my school list for Becca's school tour. I had finished my section the previous Wednesday, and was given a partially completed list from one of the interns that left. I spent the rest of my day getting as far as I could, since that's what was emphasized during the meeting.

Lots of leads today, as we try to catch up on them.  At the intern meeting, which was full of hilarious talk of sex and porn scandals, Ron told us more about the intern 2.0 program.  He basically wanted to let us all know that it in no way affects the work we do in this internship, that he won't like any of us any more or less based on whether we do the 2.0 program.  I, personally, am really interested in continuing my internship, I love everything I have done so far and wouldn't mind keeping it up.  Just have to think of ideas for what I would do during it.
No new art to post as of yet, once again...
Though I am excited for this weekend, New York International Auto Show!

3/27/13

My research yielded 33 leads for OnPoint Media today. During our intern meeting we discussed the option of extending our internships after they end on May 15th. Internship 2.0, as it is called, would allow us to choose what we want to focus on instead of being spread thin and doing "boring" work. I think that it would be a fantastic opportunity for me to continue to develop knowledge and skills, while affording me more time to seek employment without a gap in time on my resume. I finished out the day finding 51 bands in the Cleveland Ohio area to contact for our One Night Stand shows. Many of the bands I found that label themselves as "jam" or "psychedelic" rock bands were extremely talented, and I cannot wait to hear back from them.

On Point Client Project

3/27/13- Today, I collected 27 leads, which is not one of my best, in cities in Mass.  Then Ron called me into his office to give me a project to do.  The project was to look up allergy APPs for research into creating one for an allergy doctor.  From there I went to ITunes and search allergy APPs to come up with a list of what was out there.  Then I composed a list of what I thought should be in the APP to make it successful.  I liked doing this project; it gave me a chance to work on an On Point Media client project.  Then I continue to research bands in KY for One Night Stand Project.

Boiling Point

Today started off as usual, conducting more leads for OnPoint Media. I was looking for businesses classified under healthcare in Stoneham, MA. Both yesterday and today have been pretty good days for lead numbers. Yesterday I was able to accumulate 40 in total and today I was able to find 35. Still not as high as I would like, but I'm happy.

Last week we started looking for bands for One Night Stand. We came across a few problems in the execution at first. This week Amanda had come up with a different way for the interns to find these bands, and so far it has worked very well. Today I was looking for bands in and around Ann Arbor, Michigan. I was able to find a total of 87 bands. Ideally a handful of these bands will be interested in playing for One Night Stand.

It's very interesting to see how things are going to play out. We've been talking about this project for a while now, so it's exciting to see things fall into place in order to make One Night Stand a success.

In a meeting today, Ron mentioned a video called 212 degrees. He discussed how 210 degrees is essentially just hot water, but the 2 extra degrees (212) bring water to its boiling point. I believe he was trying to reiterate this idea toward a work ethic. These two degrees may seem insignificant, but it is essential in order to bring water to its boiling point. What I took from this was that these 2 degrees parallel honest efforts and hard work in the work place. What work may seem insignificant is ultimately a vital piece in the whole process. Instead of casting aside these 2 degrees, put a little more effort in to reach that peak performance.

Interns-One Night Stand Project

3/21/13- Today, I started to produce One Night Stand event by gathering bands in Florida.  We then will put together a package to send the bands to have them pay to play at benefit concert for anti-bullying.  All of the interns are responsible for producing a show in a city like Tampa, Florida by doing marketing, contacting the band and gather their information needed.  I also did leads collecting 36 for the day.

Half Way of the Week

Today is the half point of the work week and the office has still been playing catch up on business contact collection from last week's lower than normal numbers. I spent significantly more time on this task, focusing specifically on more building and construction companies in Methuen, MA, racking up a total of 36 collections. This number is significantly higher than most days and I feel it will be a good contribution towards our goal. In other news, the weather seems to be improving since yesterday's cold wave, which is good for my spring craving, but bad for my office attention. I'll survive. This afternoon should mostly consist of band collection in Tampa, FL for One Night Stands. Yesterday, I cracked down and collected over 30 rock bands that should help our chances of locking down about 5 per city. Odds are, today we will focus on a new city sample of bands and I hope to collect about as much as yesterday. Things are well.

I'll check back tomorrow.

What's new with the Interns?

3/22/13- Today I 34 collected companies in MA for On Point Media.  The list that where given were hard to find a lot of the companies therefore my number is not as high as the other days.  I then continued to find bands for the One Night Stand Tour in KY. We are collecting all the locate band of the state then contact them later  to see if they want to pay to play.

3/26/13

For the first half of today we focused primarily on catching up on leads. We were a bit behind due to the snow day last week, so we spent 3 hours today making up for that. I was only able to find 33 leads in that time, because my lists weren't great. After lunch we continued searching for bands to contact for the One Night Stand shows. We revised our criteria for searching for bands, which made it easier to find a large number of potential bands for our primary list. By the end of the day I was able to find 77 rock bands.

Not much news today at Esente, plenty more leads done.  Yesterday we also started making a list of bands for the One Night Stand campaign by finding band pages on ReverbNation.  Seems pretty easy to do so far, and it's interesting hearing all the different kinds of music people are playing on there.  No new art to post yet.

Running Behind

This weekend I took it easy and traveled up to Maine to go to Sunday River to go snowboarding. The conditions were amazing except for a little wind but other than that it was sunny, and powdery, and just overall fantastic.

In our intern meeting today we talked about how some interns just didn't quite make it to this point and why we need to continue to work hard so we can get the most out of our time here. With all the different things we have going on here I can't understand why anyone would want to leave or how anyone could not work hard knowing what it could mean for them. Basically, I think some people blew it. \

Esente Today

Today has been different in terms of doing leads because, we are trying to pick up the pace and make up leads. I was able to churn out 23 leads for energy, environmental market, electronics, and fabrication for today. During the intern meeting we were re-affirmed on our position in the company and how beneficial we are to the company, as well as letting us know that there will be two new large parts/rolls put into motion as part of the company. Business will be booming and busy here in the future and I hope that I can be part of the working mechanism known as the "Bike"/company.

Short Term Goals

Monday, Monday. Always a groggy day but productive nonetheless. I began with business contact collection for OnPoint media from building and construction companies in Methuen MA, reeling in a total of 24 collections. Last week was a slower week than normal, so the focus for the interns this week is to catch up on contact collections for OnPoint. This task should be doable because I have recently added an hour to each day I am at the office. This allows me to up my collection numbers without cutting into the other projects I have been working on. Additionally, my contact list for schools in Essex County has been growing significantly compared to previous days, and my section is nearing completion. My goal is to have it finished by the end of the week at the latest. This should also be attainable unless we shift our focus to collection band contacts for the upcoming One Night Stands events.

That's all for today.

Rate Limit Exceeded

Yesterday after lunch we had a small photo shoot of all the interns that were in. There was a small space set up in one of the side offices to get our portraits for the intern website. I just hope my hair looked alright.

Today we started work for producing the shows for the One Night Stand anti-bullying concert series. We have been using the website ReverbNation to compile the contact information of bands in specific areas so we will be able to get in touch with them easily. I am responsible for hard rock bands in Tampa Florida. The website proved to be more of a hassle to use than expected because you pretty much need to have a user account to browse freely. Otherwise the site blocks use for a period of time.

It's a nice change of pace from the normal information gathering because we get to listen to the songs these bands have recorded and the interns need to talk to each other since some of us are working on the same list of bands. We also may or may not have made some snide comments about the bands choices in names, songs, attire, etc. But all in all the bands arent' bad.

Tim Pietrasik

One Night Stand

Today started off a little different than usual. What I mean by this is that the interns didn't start working on the leads first thing upon arrival. Instead of starting the day off with Internet research for OnPoint Media, we started to research bands for the One Night Stand. In order to look into potential bands for the One Night Stand campaign, we began by looking at ReverbNation.com. We were each given five pages on bands to go through and see if any were worthy of adding to the list. One Night Stand will feature live sets by bands all over the country who will perform at various venues, local to the bands. The bands for One Night Stand are all rock-centered musicians and artists who we hope will be interested in supporting Right Now, as well as promoting themselves.

Just as I was writing this, Ron called the interns into his office to watch a video for the song Fix You that was recorded by Becca. While Becca was up for her visit, she worked on another video that would go along to the aforementioned song. The song features Becca singing in front of a black backdrop with white lights and various outside shots, ie. the blustery winter storm we had while she was visiting. The video originally wasn't planned, but they took advantage of Becca's visit in order to create more content for her YouTube channel. Both this video and the video that Valerie produced are great, and can't wait for others to be able to see them!

Once I finish up the blog today, I plan to work on leads for about an hour and a half before going back researching potential bands for One Night Stand. The wheels are spinning and we're moving forward with all the projects we've been talking about. It's starting to heat up and things are becoming even more interesting as we continue moving forward.

A New Project for the Interns...

Today we're beginning work to produce a One Night Stand (Right Now) benefit.  The preliminary work involved (so far) is going through a giant list of bands.  In this case, limited to the city of Tampa, Florida.  We are trying to zero on the bands most likely to need and take advantage of the opportunity we offer.  This means that they have enough fans to confirm their existence, but not so many that they'll laugh at the conditions of our offer.  It is amazing how many of them either don't list any contact information for booking, or just list a band member's name rather than display anything helpful to anyone who wants to book them and doesn't sit behind them in remedial english class.  We are expected to assemble a list of roughly 34 bands that fit the criteria.  After listening to a couple handfuls of them already, I can predict that by the end, not only will I have a list of 34 bands, but 34 more reason why Florida is a horrible, horrible place.  Or as I like to think of it, the worst parts of Connecticut and California put together.  Despite the involvement of a painfully humid,  post-ironic wasteland, it should be a fun and resume-building project.  I look forward it.  I have booked a few shows in Boston, most of which have been pretty successful, but it will be interesting to see what it's like to be operating a little out of my element.

One Night Stands Band Collection

The last day of the work week has brought about new projects I am excited to get moving on. The interns and I have been assigned to start collecting potential bands to play at our One Night Stands events coming up later this year. We have been researching many different bands in the Tampa Florida area to find contact information to use later when request emails are to be sent. This has been an interesting process so far because I have been finding interesting sounds and images from many different artists. I can picture certain bands attending these events and gaining experience and promotional value from playing at our upcoming events. This is the first big step in organizing these events. Without the bands, there is no event. The selection process has been broken down by genre, and also size of the artist's fanbase. At this point, we are mostly scanning for bands with around 100 to 1,000 fans, for this is the most likely size of bands that will be interested in an event of this nature.

As this project makes progress, more updates will follow.

I had 17 leads today before we were put on the job of collecting bands to start producing a show. It's kinda cool to be part of that production. It's amazing how many bands don't have e-mail or websites out there, one would think they would want to be contacted for performance opportunities... Go figure.
Tomorrow is my last class at New England Institute of Art! All I have left for school is the senior portfolio show on April 12, at 1pm located at 10 Brookline Place West in Brookline MA. If anyone's in the area, come by and see what the art students have been up to.

Getting the ball rolling for ONS!

My research for finding leads for OnPoint Media yielded 27 contacts today. During the latter half of the day all of the interns collaborated and began searching for bands to contact for the One Night Stand shows. We focused our search on bands from Tampa Florida. I'm extremely excited to continue searching for bands, and to eventually get into contact with and book them for our events!

3/20/13

Things are really beginning to pick up around here! I had a great day finding leads for OnPoint Media today; I finished several sections and came up with 41 leads. After leads I went onto finding new "bottom links" to put on the Buzz on Bullying blog site. My contact list for Chelmsford High School is finally done; I'll pick up with middle schools tomorrow. After that was finished I moved onto finding 3 articles to be posted on the RightNow against drunk driving website. My job was to find and summarize the 3 articles, then provide a link to the stories for people to continue reading. It's always really cool for me to see my work posted in a space where many people have access to it. Tomorrow we are going to begin finding bands for the One Night Stand shows, which I am extremely excited about!

#23 in the Esente Music Group Internship Series

This morning the office received a breakfast spread, courtesy of Becca Levy's parents, which was a pleasant.  We're spending a little more time on OnPoint Media leads to today to make up for the snow storm yesterday, which means an extra pastry-fueled hour of lead time

In the second half of Monday, one of the other interns and I went over a generalized email that will be sent to bands to convince them to get involved in a Right Now/One Night Stand benefit concert in their home city.  The first draft we were shown was pretty straight forward and decently written.  Honestly, it probably would have been fine the way it was, but since we were given a chance to correct/build on it, I filled up just about every empty space on the page with barely (if at all) legible notes.  The email outlines the benefits that bands can expect from being involved in the show.  I tried to add a sort of tagline to each benefit listed.  The idea being to make it more fun to read, to show some personality on behalf of Esente, and spell out the what the perks will mean to them (the bands).  I think this is probably important since many of the potential recipients are sure to be idiots.  Though the other intern and I agreed it made the offer sound a little scam-y, we both acknowledged that the appeal wouldn't and shouldn't be directed at fringy bands like ours.  Fringy bands don't have any money and are too unambitious and passively cynical to consider taking an opportunity like the one we (at Esente) are offering.  Overall, I think we made it slightly more effective.

Esente Today

Well, I dont have much to show for this week because I was sick on monday, and we got 16 inches of snow on tuesday...so I have been working on some fan art for Becca at home for a few days (I will post the progress of the image). Eventhough I have been through some hard times here recently with sick kids and personal issues I am determined to not give up on what I have to do here at Esente. Today I began my day with legal leads for Medford MA, and we will go from there.

Loopy on a Day Off

Seeing as we had a snow day yesterday we are running a little bit behind on leads and we will be spending some extra time on them today. Yesterday was spent pretty much shoveling my driveway and wiping down my car because it seemed every time I finished it was just covered with snow again. Story of my life.

Since I was home all day yesterday I spent some time working on some personal art. I have been working on a large pastel drawing of a box of Fruit Loops for some time now and I wanted to get back to it yesterday. It is about 4' x 5' so the size of each loop is about the size of my head. It doesn't have a lot left to be done but since I rarely work on it, it still isn't finished. (Check out more drawings of Fruit Loops.)

I did spend some time working on the anti-bullying posters as well, but they really don't look much different than any previous versions. I do have some more ideas for slogans I'm just having trouble finding the pictures to illustrate them. I might just have to draw them on my own.
