Wednesday July 30th: the beginning of the end. At this point in the summer, with college semesters looming on the horizon, the interns begin to say their goodbyes. As of today we are losing Danielle, although she will be returning within a month or so to start her job here (a bright light at the end of the tunnel for all of you out there wondering if internships net you jobs), but tomorrow will be the last day for a stunning 3 of our interns: Melissa, Stephen, and Marielle. As Ron has said many times, Melissa and Stephen were the "quarterbacks" of this project, having been here since late may. Some would even call them the OG's of the 12 pack of life. Either way, I call them colleagues, friends, and extremely talented people I will always cherish working with.
As a small token of their departure Ron had Ben and myself do some video interviews with each intern, having them describe their experience (somewhat like a certain blog you may be reading...), their thoughts and memories from the summer, and general advice they may wish to pass on to future interns. It was a day for reflection, but also for looking forwards. Discussing what we've done here, what we've accomplished, and how far we've come also gives you a glimpse into how far we can still go. What this internship will be valued at in our future when we step out into the big bright world looking for jobs, careers, families, pensions, car payments, and our lives. The skills we sharpened, the knowledge we gained, the experiences we shared, all from this time in our lives will have a positive effect on us down the road, or at least that's what we all hope, collectively, and individually. My hope is that every single one of us is right.
To the long road ahead and the bright future it leads to.
